Study Permit

Updated August 16, 2023

Millions of applicants around the world dream of getting into one of Canada's colleges and universities and getting a study permit.

Studying in Canada is an exciting and rewarding experience for many international students. Once you've decided what you want to study, you'll need to consider enrollment dates, application deadlines, student visa processing times, and English language requirements. In addition to BA, MBA, PhD, certificate and diploma programs, Canadian colleges and universities offer a variety of short summer language courses, continuing education and exchange programs. The main entry period is September each year, but many colleges and universities have a lesser entry period for him in January or the summer semester. Most foreigners need a study permit to study in Canada.

If your course is less than 6 months, you only need a visitor visa to come to Canada. However, if you wish to study for more than 6 months, you will need to apply for a student visa. To apply for a student visa, you must first receive a letter of acceptance from your educational institution. Canada has over 98 universities, but the school you choose must be approved by a state or territory government to accept international students. If you want to apply to a college or university, you should check this first.

To apply for a study permit, you will need:

  • Letter of Acceptance from Designated Learning Institution (DLI)

  • A valid passport or travel document

  • Prove that you have enough money to pay: Tuition fees, living expenses, return transportation costs, etc.

  • You are a law-abiding citizen with no criminal record and do not pose a risk to Canadian security. You may be required to show a police permit.

  • Be healthy. You may need to undergo a medical examination.

  • Convince the immigration officer that you are leaving Canada at the end of your studies.
